  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast Make sure it's fresh for the best rise.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup chocolate chips Can swap for nuts or dried fruits.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine warmed milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs to the flour mixture.
  4. Mix until the dough comes together, then knead for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Incorporate chocolate chips, then place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1-2 hours).
Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  3. Let it rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Best served fresh, plain, or toasted. Goes well with butter, jam, or ice cream. Can be stored wrapped at room temperature for 2-3 days, or refrigerated for up to a week. Freezes well for up to 3 months.
