Ingredients

For the cake
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 0.75 cups milk
  • 0.25 cups cocoa powder (optional, for chocolate version)
For the frosting
  • 1 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pink or red food coloring
  • Sprinkles (edible glitter, or candy hearts, optional)

Method

Make the Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two heart-shaped cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, until just combined.
  7. If making a chocolate version, add the cocoa powder.
  8. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Assemble the Heart Shape
  1. Once the cakes are completely cool, carefully remove them from the pans.
  2. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and flip the second layer upside down on top to create a heart shape.
  3. Trim any uneven edges to perfect the heart shape if needed.
Frost and Decorate
  1. In a bowl, beat the softened butter for the frosting until creamy.
  2. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, heavy cream (or milk), and vanilla extract.
  3. Add pink or red food coloring to achieve your desired shade.
  4. Spread the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake.
  5. Decorate with sprinkles, edible glitter, or candy hearts as desired.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing. Don’t overmix the batter; mix until combined. For an extra moist cake, add a little applesauce to the batter. If you want even layers, use a kitchen scale to weigh the batter in each pan. Feel free to customize the cake with different flavors or colors.
