Method
Make the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two heart-shaped cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, until just combined.
- If making a chocolate version, add the cocoa powder.
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Assemble the Heart Shape
- Once the cakes are completely cool, carefully remove them from the pans.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and flip the second layer upside down on top to create a heart shape.
- Trim any uneven edges to perfect the heart shape if needed.
Frost and Decorate
- In a bowl, beat the softened butter for the frosting until creamy.
- Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, heavy cream (or milk), and vanilla extract.
- Add pink or red food coloring to achieve your desired shade.
- Spread the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate with sprinkles, edible glitter, or candy hearts as desired.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing. Don’t overmix the batter; mix until combined. For an extra moist cake, add a little applesauce to the batter. If you want even layers, use a kitchen scale to weigh the batter in each pan. Feel free to customize the cake with different flavors or colors.
